This blog contains playlists for Katchie's Planet Jazz, a weekly radio show on KRTU San Antonio, Jazz 91.7 FM. The program presents jazz and improvisation from various corners of the world: jazz-world fusions, traditional idioms, and what I like to call the "great global songbook," which includes jazz-related genres from other parts of the world. About your host

KATCHIE CARTWRIGHT. I'm an ethnomusicologist, performer, and teacher. I have a doctorate in music is from The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (Ph.D., Music, 1998). My husband, Richard Oppenheim, and I moved to San Antonio from New York City in 2006, when I accepted a position at Northwest Vista College, where I currently serve as associate professor of music. I was born in New York, and have been a New Yorker for much of my adult life, although my idyllic summers and many winters of my youth were spent in the deep woods of Minisink Hills, Pennsylvania. My bassist daughter Eleonore Oppenheim still lives in the city, where she performs with Missy Mazzoli's Victoire and other ensembles, and is pursuing a masters degree in music.

My San Antonio-based jazz-world group, Katchie & Le Monde Caché ("the hidden world") performs "Great Global Songbook"; a jazz-based mix of modern and antique genres from Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean. The ensemble includes the superb saxophonist Richard Oppenheim. I play flutes and sing in several languages.
